As you might have seen last week, we finally started the very last phase of the illustration process! We now just need to push through the finish line and add the lights and shadows.
This week specifically, I have 5 more illustrations to show you!
I’m especially proud of this one; it might be my favorite in the entire book.
Not much was in the way of my progress this time thankfully; working on these has been very hard but nothing unusual, and seeing the finish line approaching has been revitalizing!
Adding light allows me to think a bit more carefully about this world; you might notice that I try to keep the light coherent with the time of day and where Susie is facing. It’s not perfect, barely noticeable, but it’s pretty decent at better giving the illusion of space.
On stopping to play it safe
As I got some art feedback from my partner, I realized that in many ways I have to learn to be less “safe” with my art - less afraid to make use of stronger light and more dramatic colors.
For example, beyond the visual, I think my future stories would also benefit from taking more risks. If, like me, you are an over-thinker and a bit insecure, I think that could also very much apply to our own lives in general.
To expand on the art subject, I recommend ergojosh’s video which I discovered yesterday; it’s not the most concise, but it gave me more food for thought!
But let’s now come back to the book and the illustrations! What’s left for next week?
We have exactly 6 illustration left before the book interior is over, so hopefully by next week only a fraction will still be a work in progress.
I want to also get to work on the cover; I’m not sure where to start and how it should look, so I will need your help next week! If I manage to get some sketches done, I think it would be fun to have you guys vote on the one you prefer :)
