This is it Reader!

I'm not gonna hold back the good news you saw in the subject line: I colored the entire book! :) Today I'll go over how I did this and what is coming next before the book is complete

But first! The usual update about our monthly print giveaway!

Not much to say today, but I'm simply proud that last Tuesday I picked a winner, contacted them, packed and shipped their earned prize, all on the same day! I'm getting better at it than I've been in the past.

I hope the package will arrive very soon! :)

The book is now in color 🖼️

As stated very clearly at the beginning of this email, I have completed the colors for the whole book!

In total, I have 6 more colored illustrations to show you today.

Like every week, it was hard to put myself in movement and finish even one image. But once I went past the resistance and the more complex illustrations, I finished them without even realizing it!

Momentum is a real thing, and it's now a big weight lifted off my shoulders, just like when I finished the ink last week.

I tried to change the Witch's hat colors; that's one of the many colors I want to adjust in the polishing phase.

This also goes to show that inking the illustrations was slowing me down tremendously! Now it feels way easier.

Now, what does it mean that I'm so ahead of schedule?

I can't wait to light this one! That's where all the atmosphere will come from

According to the plans I have made at the beginning of the year, I have now moved the completion date from February 21 to the 14th.

Keep in mind that this is a very generous estimate: I'm still unsure, for example, of what my pace will be for the shading, especially when I'll get more busy. This is why I'm leaving some buffer time.

So, what's next?

The yellow ray here is a guide for the shading phase: that's where the shadow will be!

I'm very happy to have passed this milestone, because next week I might have very little time to work: I'm going to both a business trip and a concert; it's gonna be intense. But I'll carry a tablet with me, and my goal will be to complete the little transitions between pages (if you received the book, you know what I'm talking about!), and, if I can, start the shading process.

This one is my money shot! It was hard to not add all the lights right away

Bloom scrolling

I really want to share with you my art discovery of the week: a complete gallery of public domain images.

"A Tree of Marvelous Beauty" - Virginia Frances Sterrett

Just like every year, the public domain grows larger and larger, and in this context, I've discovered a great website called public.work.

But there is a catch: instead of showing the art classified like you would find in a library archive, you are instead met with a Pinterest-style grid that you can scroll infinitely!

First of all, it's a lot of fun, but it's above all some great artworks that you've never seen before (I can guarantee you that).

You may want to find other sources to get higher-resolution versions of the images, but it's fascinating to scroll through the infinite grid and get lost on here.

Whether it's for inspiration or just out of curiosity, I encourage you to take a look! https://public.work/

"Sea-Nymphs Hourly Ring His Knell" - Warwick Goble (I'm exceptionally inspired by the compositions of this artist)

Speaking of public domain, here's another bonus resource if you want to go further!

Old Book Illustrations is also one of my favorites.

When speaking about pictures in the public domain, you mostly hear about paintings but rarely about book illustrations. The artists creating those are far more obscure than their exhibited counterparts, and yet, they are definitely worth giving a look!

"Dance with Me - Dugald Stewart Walker

I have discovered and studied artists from this website many times before, and I really appreciate their curation: https://www.oldbookillustrations.com/

Happy scrolling 🌸

That's it for this week! Thank you for following my journey through this art adventure :)

I wish you all the best for this week, and as always,

Take care,
